Voluntary Redundancy
Thinking about taking Voluntary Redundancy?
Following on from this, what may be described as" VR honeymoon" period. Our experience shows that often at this time an instinctive response is to bolt-down the hatches and take the decision not to spend a penny until they find another job and certainly not to pay for careers advice, "it should be free I hear people say." And "besides what good is careers advice any way, after all what good did it do when I left school, college or university."

Voluntary Redundancy is the buzz word at present particularly in the public sector, Councils and public bodies across the UK are working out how to reduce their costs and it mostly if not always comes down to making staff redundant.
From an individual's perspective, VR - can sometimes be described as winning the Lottery depending how much you get related to your circumstances. Three balls i.e. £10.00 or all six i.e. the jackpot.
Obviously making the decision to go or stay will depend on your point of view at the time, and it's a question Jeff Priestley of Nottingham based Changekey Partnership gets asked all the time.
Below in no particular order is a list of questions we often ask clients when helping them making their decision.
- Do you enjoy your job
- Could you find another job doing what you would like to do in say, "three months"
- Why do you go to work, is it just for the money or does the job offer you more such as friendship, an opportunity to grow and perhaps learn new things or do you just enjoy working with or managing others
- Is the "grapevine" putting pressure on you, telling you that once this VR package is gone you will not have such an opportunity again and may just be made redundant on low government rates
- Is this the opportunity to do something new, perhaps start your own business
- Is this an opportunity to enable your partner etc to do something they would like to do
- Are you confident that your skills would be valued in the present job market
- Can you live on my redundancy money or savings if you don't find a job for say, six months
- What will it be like if all your friends leave and you're on your own perhaps being expected to pick up their work. How will the new work load be organised
- Perhaps you are someone who may be bored with your job and perhaps looking to do something different, do you know what it is you want to do and how to go about convincing a new employer you are the one for them.
Assuming you are not about to retire then usually the quicker you get back into employment the better, whether working for yourself or for another employer, either full or part time will make a difference to you and you families quality of life.
OK you decide to opt for VR, What next............ It is our experience that unless people have a clear idea what they intend to do and a plan to take them to the next step, they can often slip into a state of complacency, having a little extra in the bank, perhaps taking that well deserved dream holiday or finishing off those jobs round the house.
Of course Job Centre's advertised a free service and my advice is to check it out, however this often takes more time and by the time they realise that the" free service" has a cost in time and results, three months have passed by and many have not even attended an interview let alone won the job and their confidence has diminished to such an extent that job descriptions over whelm and applications become few and far between.
The clients we see are the lucky ones who wake up from the malaise and realise that at this time an investment in their future is essential if they are not to continue on this downward slope of long term unemployment. At the Changekey Partnership our first action is to reinstate the confidence that lies within and develop a relationship with each individual that provides a foundation for the client on which to begin afresh.
Obviously the sooner we meet the client in the VR or redundancy cycle the quicker we can help them get back into employment.
